Adding a Dropdown Arrow to Your Wix Menu Using Unicode Characters

When designing menus in Wix, you may notice that by default, there is no dropdown arrow next to items that contain a submenu. Many website visitors expect a visual indicator like an arrow to signify additional options are available. While Wix doesn’t provide built-in dropdown arrows for menus, you can easily create one using Unicode characters.

What is Unicode?

Unicode is a standard that provides unique codes for characters used in most writing systems, including symbols like arrows, currency signs, and much more. By using Unicode, you can insert a variety of symbols into your Wix menus without needing any custom graphics.

How to Add a Dropdown Arrow to Your Wix Menu

You can manually add a dropdown arrow next to your menu items by simply inserting a Unicode character into the text of your menu labels. This is a quick and easy way to enhance the user experience by making it clear that a menu item has a dropdown submenu.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Open the Wix Editor.

  2. Select your Menu.

  3. Click on the Manage Menu button.

  4. In the text box for each menu item with a dropdown, add a Unicode arrow symbol after the text.

For example:

Products ▼
Services ▼

Best Unicode Arrows for Dropdown Menus

Here are a few common Unicode characters that work well as dropdown arrows:

  •  (U+25BC) - Black Down-Pointing Triangle

  •  (U+25BE) - Black Down-Pointing Small Triangle

  •  (U+25BF) - White Down-Pointing Small Triangle

How to Insert Unicode Characters

For Windows:

  1. Place your cursor in the text box where you want the arrow.

  2. Hold down the Alt key and type the Unicode number on the numeric keypad. For example, to insert  (U+25BC), hold Alt and type 25BC.

    • Ensure that Num Lock is on if you're using the numeric keypad.

Alternatively, copy and paste the Unicode symbol directly from this post.

For Mac:

  1. Place your cursor in the text box where you want the arrow.

  2. Press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer.

  3. In the search bar, type "arrow" and find the desired arrow symbol. Double-click on it to insert it into your menu label.

Alternatively, you can copy and paste the symbol from here.

Example in Practice:

Let’s say you’re creating a menu for a website that has categories like "Products" and "Services" with dropdown submenus. After adding a dropdown arrow, the menu could look like this:

Now, your visitors can immediately see which menu items have more options available.

Conclusion

Even though Wix menus don’t include dropdown arrows by default, adding one is easy and quick using Unicode characters. It’s a small touch that can significantly improve the navigation experience on your website.

Give it a try, and make your menu more intuitive for your visitors today!
